Moving in Wickham
Wickham has changed faster than anywhere else in this pocket. Once a working harbour-edge suburb of terraces and cottages around Hannell Street and Albert Street, it is now anchored by the Newcastle Interchange, where the heavy rail terminates and the light rail begins, with new apartment buildings rising beside the old terrace streets. So a Wickham move can be two completely different jobs: a tight kerbside carry into a single-fronted terrace, or a lift-and-loading-dock move in a new apartment block where you book the lift and the dock with building management. We ask which one yours is up front, because they need different trucks, different timing and a different plan, and getting that wrong is what turns a move into a long day.

- Albert Street
The kerb and the carry
Every Wickham move starts with the access, because that is what decides the truck, the crew and the timing. Here is what we plan around:
- Anchored by the Newcastle Interchange (heavy rail terminus and light rail start), so the streets near it carry transport traffic.
- A genuine split of stock: old terraces and cottages on Hannell and Albert Streets alongside new apartment towers.
- Apartment moves here mean booking the lift and the loading dock with building management before the day.
- The older terrace streets have no off-street parking, so those moves are kerbside carries like the rest of the pocket.
Two jobs in one suburb: a tight kerbside terrace carry, or a booked lift and loading dock in a new Interchange apartment.

Parking, loading and permits in the City of Newcastle
Inner Newcastle is City of Newcastle territory, and the honest situation is that there is no easy removal-truck parking permit for the big jobs. The council does offer an On-Street (Temporary) Parking Permit that lets a vehicle park beyond the signposted limits, including in a loading zone, but it is only issued to registered vehicles under 4.5 tonnes and 7.5 metres, so a full-size removal truck usually does not qualify. Where you actually need to occupy road space, a footpath or a verge during a move (for example, coning off a length of kerb or placing a storage container out the front), the right instrument is a City of Newcastle Road Occupancy Licence, which the council assesses case by case, usually with a simple traffic plan and at least three business days notice to neighbours. For most moves none of that is needed: an inner-city move is about the right-sized truck, a scouted legal spot and good timing rather than a reserved bay, and we plan the kerb for you. Always check the current rules and fees with City of Newcastle, as conditions change.
Wickham removals: common questions
Do you move into the new Wickham apartments?
Yes. For the apartment towers near the Interchange we book the lift and the loading dock with building management ahead of the day, plan the trolley route from the dock to the lift, and work to any move-in time windows the building sets.
What about the old terraces on Hannell and Albert Streets?
Those are kerbside moves like the rest of the pocket: no off-street parking, narrow frontages and a planned carry from the nearest legal spot. We scout it before the day so the crew is not improvising on a busy street.
Is the Interchange traffic a problem on moving day?
It can make the streets near the Interchange busy, so we time the load away from the peak and position the truck where it is legal and clear of the transport flow.
How much does a Wickham move cost?
Our online-quote rates start at $200/hour for two movers and a truck ($250 for three, $400 for a larger crew with two trucks), and you get a clear indicative quote up front for your specific move. No surprises on the day.
